Track Student Interests to Better Target Your Marketing Activities

— Apr 11, 2011

Today I’m going to show you a simple way to record what students are interested in, for marketing purposes.

Under the ‘Misc’ tab in the student’s profile, you will find an ‘Interested in’ field:

This is a free field that you can populare as you like, you can store for example:

  • level of the class the student is interested in
  • course language
  • exam that needs to be taken
  • preferred schedule
  • …all of previous ones, comma separated

By storing this extra attribute, you gain the ability to filter students in the advanced search section:

It becomes then really easy to retrieve all the students you need to contact for a given marketing activity.

If you want to contact people that want French lessons, type ‘French’ and press search. If you want people who need to take the IELST exam, type ‘IELST’, and so on.

Is also worth noting that the “Interested in” search box allows for partial matches. This means that, for example, searches for ‘Italian’ and ‘Evening’ will both return a student whose interest is ‘Italian Evening’.

The ‘Interested in’ field features auto-completing suggestions, so that you can keep interests consistent across multiple students without the overhead of preconfiguing them.

As any other search result, you can dowload the list of matching students in Excel format, along with their address, email, phone numbers etc.
After clicking the search button, just follow the ‘download .xls’ link on the right hand side to save the file on your desktop.

With this simple technique you should be able to precisely target students for your marketing communications.
